Game launches can be a broadcaster’s chance at a breakout moment, but seizing this moment takes timing, preparation, talent, and luck. The Fallout 4 launch was no exception. It managed to pull impressive numbers, as we talked about in our previous post. This launch in particular was wrapped up in a great deal of hype. As such, it was a chance for broadcasters to engage with a much wider audience than they’d ever been exposed to otherwise, and one in particular managed to turn the Fallout 4 launch into a major personal debut.

CohhCarnage, a variety broadcaster who usually managed an average of about 3 to 5 thousand viewers per day, increased his average viewership to around 20 thousand playing Fallout 4 each day the week it was launched. In the preceding four months, his stream had achieved 572 thousand unique viewers, but during the Fallout launch week it had 992 thousand. Of those, 750 thousand were new uniques that had never before viewed his stream. Further, 209 thousand watched his stream for more than 30 minutes. We drew a comparison between Lirik, a very successful variety broadcaster, and CohhCarnage, partially because their broadcast times overlap, and partially to show Cohh’s explosive growth.

The majority of CohhCarnage’s viewers came from the most popular games on Twitch, which goes a long way to explaining why Fallout 4 itself has performed so well in the recent Twitch standings. About 31 percent of his new followers came from Counter Strike and League of Legends, both consistently in the top 5. Many others came from Overwatch, Call of Duty, H1Z1, Star Wars: Battlefront, and Destiny, showing that Fallout 4’s appeal with the FPS audience is strong. Additionally, viewers watched a total of 166 million minutes of Fallout 4 on his channel, with 40 percent of that viewership coming from brand new uniques who watched more than 30 minutes. Below is a look at the games and channels followed by the new uniques who stayed and watched more than 30 minutes of Fallout 4 in Cohh’s Channel.

It was a week of incredible growth for Cohh, but it wasn’t a fluke. Not only was he able to secure early access and the right to stream the game before everyone else, he also planned long in advance to do this. He prepped his entire stream for the launch, from top to bottom. He changed his alerts and his overlays. He also arranged giveaways, which inevitably drew a huge crowd to his stream. Cohh’s efforts were a success, and he gained 112 thousand followers and over 1,800 new subscribers, and received over 1,600 donations during the course of his Fallout 4 streams.

If, as a broadcaster, you’re going to pull something like this off, you need help. Cohh has a dedicated team that assisted him with the prep work and the management of his stream. One reason his team is so strong has to do with the 1,600 donations he received, all of which come with the option to give part of the tip to his team members. Cohh understood that the key to having a strong team is rewarding them for their efforts. Without a reliable team, it is almost impossible to capitalize on opportunities for explosive growth.
