Conspiracy theories are different than conspiracies. Conspiracy theories are conspiracies on steroids. I think this distinction is very important, because someone who knows that the term “conspiracy theory” has a negative connotation (implying that the appeal to a conspiracy is based on prejudice or insufficient evidence, or insanity), and who joined those who ridicule them, can end up believing (and I guess many do) that no conspiracies ever take place, or that they’re so rare they’re a negligible phenomenon (and they’ll tend to assume that conspiracies in general are…
