Woke up 4:30 am.

I think the difficulty I have reading those early essays by Didion may have also to do (or actually has to do) with the fact that she uses many references, to things (books, movies, plays, characters, plots) and people, who must have been well known in the milieu of the intelligentsia of 1960s (especially in America). And she expects the reader to know what she knows about them. Which makes those essays difficult to read for people who were not part of that milieu.
