Artforms serve as a framework for the artists’ creative input.

A Shakespearean Sonnet has a distinct form. The constraints of rhyme scheme and iambic pentameter did not impede artistic expression — quite the contrary.

Writers of fiction faced with the suggestion to build an outline or follow a form sometimes balk, arguing that such structure interferes with the creative process.

Not so.

Structure in story-building creates the need for the writer to find innovative ways to tackle fundamental problems in the story’s structure.

Creativity can be cultivated in composition.
