Those Tired Seeds

When discussing writing, the metaphor comparing ideas to seeds is a tired one. While it is overused, it is apt at the same time.

The Writing Process begins with brainstorming, followed by drafting. Upon closer examination, though, drafting is itself a form of brainstorming.

That time spent writing the first draft is a special one. The excitement has yet to fade and the flurry of writing produces just that — a lot of writing.

Ninety percent of it will be unusable. Characters, settings, and events will change. Names might shift a number of times.

But within that splurge of words will be the seed that will later mature with the process.

Questions raised will be answered, for if you have a doubt about it, so will the reader.

The process is not drafting alone, nor is it linear.

Give the project time to grow.
