Meet Dr. Curtis Carter- Week 1
C.C., Curtis L. or Curtis.
He goes by many names, but we know him best as Dr. Carter. He is a connoisseur of fine art and a founding member of the Haggerty Art Museum. When the Les Aspin program first started, Father O’Brien recruited Dr. Carter to come to Washington to take students around the city.
At first Dr. Carter said “no” to that idea, because he wanted to teach a serious course on the arts. Now he has his own class at the Les Aspin Center.
During your first week in Washington, Dr. Carter will cart you around to some of the best museums in the world.
He leaves promptly at 9 o’clock.
Which means 9 o’clock, sharp.
He is NOT afraid to leave people behind (he did it twice).
At the beginning of the class, he asks you to take your art biases and lock them in a closet. The class consists of ‘Dr. Carter Guided Tours’ of over 15 museums and buildings. After each day, we have a discussion about what we saw during the day.
After a full day of walking, we would crawl into our beds for a quick nap before discussion started. Meanwhile, when questioned on whether or not he was tired after walking around all day Dr. Carter said, “Absolutely not, I could go dancing afterwards.”
Dr. Carter is a big part of your first week here, but he is only here for the first week. Don’t worry he will return later in the semester to take you to a ballet and symphony at the Kennedy Center.
Oh, and for the interview exams, but don’t worry about that yet.
Dr. Carter may take some adjusting to, but I guarantee that after your time with him you will look back and appreciate his whit and his appreciation for the arts. He cares a lot about the arts and he truly wants to expand your thinking.
Hopefully after this week you will have an appreciation for all kinds of art… and him.
