My Dream for the young men at Eagle Academy for Young Men of Newark is FREEDOM. In the African American experience education has always been equated with freedom. Freedom to become whatever you want. Freedom from others preconceived notions about who you are and what you can become. Somewhere along the way we began to move away from that truth. An education became a “cost” or a “burden” even an “unwanted expectation”. Our children are constantly challenged to “keep it real”. Media and Music cosign this anti-education message and cripple our youth with ideas steeped in victimization and self pity. Eagle works hard to turn the tide. We challenge our Eagle scholars to embrace education and rewrite their own expectations. We challenge them to chase their freedom in a way that would make their ancestors, both black and brown, Proud.
