#4 Moore’s Law is everywhere!

Singularity University

This was once again a very very interesting week. It was more practical than the previous weeks and we had the opportunity to meet amazing people at Singularity University, but also outside.

I’m going to highlight the most interesting moments of this week:

1. We had an amazing session on “Ethics of AI and Robotics”. We discussed real/future cases and we tried to understand the impact that these technologies will have in our life and what we can do if something goes wrong. We definitely need policy and government to catch up quickly on these technologies.

2. In the end of the “Ethics of AI and Robotics” session we had the opportunity to meet Cody Wilson a guy that 3D Printed a gun and the founder of Defense Distributed, a pending 501(c)(3) status nonprofit corporation in the state of Texas that has as purpose: “To defend the civil liberty of popular access to arms as guaranteed by the United States Constitution and affirmed by the United States Supreme Court, through facilitating global access to, and the collaborative production of, information and knowledge related to the 3D printing of arms; and to publish and distribute, at no cost to the public, such information and knowledge in promotion of the public interest.” Crazy ahh?!

3. On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to visit the Google HQ in Mountain View. The campus is amazing, colorful and full of positive energy. We learned more about the work of Google in Africa (see BebaPay), learned more about Google Earth and how non-profits are using it and finally we learned more about Project Loon. Was really impressed by the work Google does and their clear focus on making the world a better place for everyone. In the end of our visit we had the chance to have lunch at the famous Charlie’s Cafe. Great food!

4. On Wednesday afternoon, we had a lecture on self-driving cars and then, the Google self-driving car came to visit us and it was amazing. Everyone went crazy and we had a great time.

5. On Thursday, we had an intense lecture on “Policy Law and Ethics”. I’m scared! We have too much information online!! We discussed some unbelievable schemes. Look at “Please Rob me”. Do you know that 600.000 Facebook accounts are hacked everyday?

6. Finally, on Friday morning we had a great workshop with the Frog Design Team. All major industries require an ecosystem where different players play different roles. We were focus on the Electric Vehicles industries and it was interesting to map the ecosystems, work with different players and come up with a strategy to succeed.

As mentioned, I already know what I’m going to work on in the next 6 weeks. Leticia, Angeles, Marianna , Vivian and I will focus on gender discrimination in C-level positions. We want to understand why only 8% of positions like CEO, CFO or CMO are filled by women. After doing some research we’ll be developing some products. Until now, we’ve been receiving amazing feedback from everyone. Already had the chance to talk with some super successful women and I can’t wait to see what is going to happen in the upcoming weeks.
