Five core pillars of basic human instincts: Imagination, Trust, Empathy, Curiosity, and Courage — ITECC

Leadership Platform

My expertise lies at the point where technology meets business, through entrepreneurship and leadership. Entrepreneurs are true leaders who gain followers because they see a future that others can’t see or they believe in a future that others see also, but have a hard time on their own.

Over the years, leading tens of enthusiastic professional teams, I have come to distil leadership into five core pillars of basic human instincts: Imagination, Trust, Empathy, Curiosity, and Courage — ITECC. No four of those are leadership, without the fifth. For this reason, I like to string them together, thinking of leadership as: “The Imagination which drives the Curiosity and the The Courage to Trust and Empathize enthusiastic teams to achieve desired outcomes”. It means providing transformative conditions and a compelling, sweeping vision to funnel others to join our mission and efforts.

Imagination is the ability to dream, to connect the dots, and to see the invisible. Imagination drives the obsession of discovery:curiosity. Curiosity is the thirst for knowledge, wisdom, and understanding.

Curiosity is a strong desire to learn and know. It’s a passion of discovering New; new ways of seeing, listening, and thinking. It’s being an unstoppable student and a teacher. Curiosity differs for everyone. Some people are finders and connectors. Some people are miners who go deep on a single subject and drill to great depths. But both need the other and benefit from their respective differences. For some people, curiosity is highly relational; for some it’s actionable, and for some it’s conceptual. For me, curiosity is all about living and thriving. Curiosity is always learning, expanding perspectives, opening new doors to new people and new ideas, unlearning what you know and learning what you don’t know. Curiosity is the prerequisite to any sense of connectedness and Empathy.

Empathy is active listening and understanding, which in turn inspires and flourishes Culture of Trust. Trust is the foundation for creating safe and belonging spaces for teams to take the risks needed to create collaboratively.

Trust sustains genuine relationships and saves the leaders from having their care for team members soured by micro-management. Empathy and trust set the scene of meaning, ownership and belonging for people, it sowers the landscape of dreaming, learning, creating, fulfillment and thrive.

“Command and control” is not leadership, it’s authoritativeness; It’s the art of taking; taking control out of entitlement and fear. Leadership is the art of giving; giving empathy and trust resulting in the sense of belonging and ownership which drives dreamers to give their best, It’s providing a fertile platform to people to fulfill their own dreams (not yours!), a platform for effective communication, understanding and relationship.

Leadership is an innate aptitude of empathic and trustful communication, it’s Inspiring people to explore their own way to their own purpose, gravitating them to be on the same page (as you): dreaming the same dream, belonging to the same destiny, and loving to realize it, bringing their whole to fulfill their own dreams.

This is where the leadership platform becomes a greenhouse of purpose, passion, and innovation, where it runs on autopilot and the sense of family and community obsoletes the need for conventional leadership by hierarchy, authority and command-control.
