With COVID came quarantine, and with quarantine came an increase in video calls, Skype and zoom. Basically, everything that separated us from our squad; and in this day and age, the squad is everything. They are those people who are closer than family but are not quite family, who know what you think before you think it, understand you even when they don’t understand, help you then ask questions later, scold you while holding you close and whose tears flow through you.

The squad are your greatest wingmen, who shoot your shot for you while you are still stalling. That’s the squad and today I bring you K-dramas’ top 10 squad goals (at least in my opinion). Some grew from enemies to closer than family while others were born inseparable.

1. Vincenzo — Geumga plaza family

What 15 tons of gold has joined together, let no man put asunder. With increased external pressure, Vincenzo realizes that he must join hands with the residents of Geumga plaza to recover his gold (in a way that guaranteed the least possible blood bath). Together with the (slightly crazy) lawyer Hong Cha-young, he wins the hearts of the residents (and his gold) and gains a family.

To follow the journey of the Korean born Italian mafia consigliere, the 2021 20-episode drama is just right.

2. Descendants of the sun — Team Alpha

Why anyone would decide to pick a fight with a member of the Team Alpha is what I won’t understand, they already look scary together (but that’s their trouble, not mine).

The 5 membered team of the elite special force unit is made up of Big boss, Wolf, Snoopy, Piccolo and Harry Potter (I know, you love their code names, too right?)

Their amazingly tight bond both on and off duty is a right source of tears and laughter in this 2016 16-episode drama.

3. Start-up — Samsan tech

I am sorry to my IT friends, but the Samsan tech trio is just the perfect picture of them. 3 incredibly smart but extremely nerdy programmers grow from friends to Co-CEOs and must do what it takes to not only keep their company up but their hearts safe (even if it means giving up the CEO position).

The 16-episode drama ended 2020 in the perfect way.

4. Rebel — Hong family

They are the right expression of from enemies to family. Thugs from all over Joseon build an amazing bond to save not only a man but also his children and, in the process, make themselves a family that becomes a force that shakes the entire nation.

5. Goblin — Goblin and Grim reaper

Your squad can’t do better than a Goblin and a grim reaper. they literally discuss with death and make things appear from thin air. They provide everything; comedy, bromance, a unique sense of naivety and they also make your enemies fight themselves for life. They are always quarrelling but when push comes to shove, they have each other’s backs.

Perfect, right? just perfect.

6. Hospital playlist — Mido and Falasol team

When 5 talented and fun surgeons make a team, you might just find yourself going to Med school. with their love for music and their tone-deaf vocalist, this amazing team of surgeons with different specialties make every episode in the 16-episode 2020 drama is a delight to watch.

7. Reply 1988 — Ssangmundong squad

Becoming friends in adulthood is fun but nothing beats growing up together. The 5 members of the Ssandmundong squad are so uniquely different that it makes their relationship even tighter and when they fall in love, they make sure that their friendship remains intact.

The heart-warming 16-episode 2016 drama stars my forever favorite actress, Lee Hyeri.

8. Crash landing on you — Company 5

I know they are North-Korean, but people don’t get cuter than this. The 16 episode 2020 drama is loaded with laughter as the soldiers who make up company 5 try to find their way not only in the course of their duty but in life and love especially when they try to fit in a foreign but not so foreign land.

9. Hwarang — Hwarang

The search for the King is important but when you put 6 able bodied men in one room, the result you are bound to get is fight but through their fights they form a very intricate and tight bond that makes the Hwarang, Flowering knights who live up to their name.

10. Prison playbook — Cell 2B6

Since its where they all met, we might as well use that as its squad name. The squad of Cell 2B6 comes together when the nation’s baseball hero, Kim Je-hyuk, ends up in the most unexpected place, the Prison. He finds help, friendship and strength in a strange place and discovers that we are all not so different after all.

So whether you have a squad or not, or you are with them or not, these 10 teams are ever ready to make you one of theirs.

THANK YOU
