How to migrate your blog from Blogger to Medium
I love Medium. Their vision for a blogging platform is very close to my ideal choice. I’ve been hosting my blog on Blogger, but have wanted to move to Medium. Unfortunately, they don’t have a direct method of migration, but I have found some steps that can allow you to migrate relatively smoothly.
Moving your content into Medium just takes two steps:
- Export your content from Blogger and import it into a free WordPress.com blog using the “Import your content” step explained in this post.
- Export your content from the temporary WordPress.com blog into Medium as explained in this post.
And that’s it!
At this point, there’s some cleanup you may want to perform. You can now delete the WordPress.com blog you created to transfer your content. I also went through all of my posts and replaced the images with full-resolution backups I had on hand. During this step I used some of Medium’s photo features, such as image grids, to make my posts look better. I also spent a lot of time customizing my homepage layout and editing tags on my stories to create useful feature pages. I was lucky enough that I was able to set up a custom subdomain of my personal website, but that feature is no longer offered. Finally I created a custom redirect script that alerts users at my old blog that I’ve migrated my blog and allows them to automatically redirect their browser to the same posts on Medium.
I’ve been waiting a long time for Medium to announce a way to import my Blogger blog into Medium, but I’m glad I was able to find a way to do it myself. If you use this guide to migrate your blog, give this post a “recommend” and check out my Medium publication for design inspiration:
