Week two is another Podcast based on music and this time I randomly found the Sum’n to Say Podcast. The podcast is made up of Yoh, Christina and Jah.

Disclaimer: Yoh is a writing God to me when it comes to Hip Hop. The man has a special way with words and you really need to check out DJ Booth to appreciate his work. So with my love for him, I was obviously a tad biased when it came to listening to this podcast.

I picked No Time for Losers because the episode was a discussion on one of the most prolific artists/personalities in Hip Hop. The episode looked at DJ Khaled and his formula for success as well as that hit that keeps giving to this day (All I Do Is Win). (We need JHB DJs to stop playing this song in the club now).

This episode was number 59 so it sat nicely on their catalogue of podcasts. They get into the topic of Dj Khaled and the anthemic song that is “All I Do Is Win” and how it has become the go to song for celebrations. Win a prize, play all I do is win, win a game of sport, play all i do is win, win another Presidential term, play All I Do Is Win. That infectious hook that everybody can dance to makes this song pretty damn special.

The three hosts are clearly music nerds because they discuss Khaled with such eloquence and they offer powerful insights about all he has done in the game and his formula that never seems to change. All I Do is Win was released in 2010 and Khaled has crafted many other hits over the last 10 years by recreating this same formula. This makes for a very interesting discussion, albeit a short podcast at 36mins but its loaded with impact.

The hosts touch on how Khaled is known as the benchmark for positivity with all his major keys but he was really salty when Tyler The Creator went to number 1 and he didn’t. That was surprising and this is discussed on the podcast. In my opinion the album was seriously terrible besides maybe 2 or 3 songs, so it makes sense that it didn’t go number 1. The question lingers, is Khaled and his formula now becoming stale? Have the people had enough of Khaled and his formula for concocting hit records? Guess time will tell.

The most powerful statement in my opinion is when Christina compares DJ Khaled to Adam Sandler. Khaled is the Adam Sandler of rap and it makes a whole lot of sense. Both make art that is to be consumed by the masses and is neither amazing nor is it terrible but its enough to keep them in the conversation. Some people love them and others hate them but they will continue to be around. WaterBoy will not win any awards but the movie is funny as hell as an entertainment spectacle. I 100% agree with this comparison and it really hit home to round out the podcast.

I would definitely give this podcast another listen and I would advise anybody interested in Hip Hop to tune in.
