My Monthly Sports Minute: Am I Still Trying to “Be Like Mike?” #11

I may be exposing my age or youth, but the first time I vividly remember hearing or seeing the phrase “like Mike” was in a 2002 movie called “Like Mike.” It starred rapper Bow Wow and also featured actor Morris Chestnut.

Since “The Last Dance” aired on ESPN, Michael Jordan’s undeniable work ethic has resurfaced. For me and countless others, Michael Jordan demonstrates greatness. He demonstrates hunger. Jordan was determined.

Each time I see people wearing his iconic sneaker on the street, it captures my attention. Jordan brand sneakers showcase how everyday people connect with sports. His iconic shoes also display how people connect with his overall success story. I think people identify with Jordan’s trials and tribulations too.

Michael Jordan’s story inspired me to start my own company, one with athletes in mind. Rather than building a large profit-driven corporation, I wanted my company to be rooted in and focused on community work.

  • My company DUFFLEBOX is a subscription box delivering specially curated essentials for athletic performance — nutrition, recovery, hair care, etc.
  • We use a buy-one, give-one model. Each time customers buy one of our boxes, we’ll give a box to an athlete who lives in a low-income community.
  • DUFFLEBOX will be officially launching on November 15th.
  • The boxes will be sold at www.dufflebox.co.

Throughout the process of building DUFFLEBOX, I’ve learned three important tips — 1: Share responsibility with my team. 2: Grow from my mistakes. 3: Apply my increasing knowledge to improve the overall product.

So, am I still trying to “be like Mike?” I think so. But, I’m doing it Maiya’s way!

#BuyOneGiveOne “To whom much is given, much is required.”
