We all know exercise is good for us. Gosh, I do not need to be telling you that! But a regular fitness program can take its toll on your health if you don’t know what to look out for. It might be beneficial, but it may also be hindering your overall wellbeing. Don’t make these three mistakes when you’re working out — they’ll work against your goals and may cause more harm than good.

Don’t eliminate your rest days!

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that the MORE you exercises the better you’ll be. This isn’t always true and an age old mistake I don’t want you to make. Not resting is a sure fire way to wear yourself down and wear your muscles down with you! Without adequate rest, you might find your progress is slow or non-existent and you don’t have the energy to give your best anyway.

Fix this and avoid it by taking a rest day (who would have thought?!) There are not ‘official’ guidelines to determine how many days, or when the best time if to rest, but listen to your body. You’ll know when you’re wearing yourself down a bit too much — safe to say, one or two a week is a good idea to start.

Outdoors? Wear Sunscreen!

Oh goodness, this is a doozey — if you’re outside for your workouts, the sun can do some serious damage to your skin. Google it and you will see what I mean — best to avoid not wearing protection and just DO IT. The usual, everyday sunscreen may not be good enough either; you’re probably sweating, so make sure your sun protection cream is waterproof and built for withstanding exercising. The fix is quite simple really. Apply water resistant sunscreen every time you head outdoors for exercise, even in the cooler months. The sun is always there, don’t risk it!

Not stretching? Make time for mobility work!

If you are skipping your stretch at the end of every workout, stop that right this minute! By not stretching post your session you are hindering your body’s growth rather than helping it. Stretching and mobility allow for the muscles to stretch out in time preventing injury and soreness.

Working on your mobility means you are bound to get more out of your actual workout in the gym (or whatever you’re enjoying doing with your exercise time) because you’ll be far more limber down the line. Be sure to incorporate 5–10 minutes a day into your routine to get the most out of your muscles.

Make time for mobility work.

They may not seem like big things at the time, but if you are anything like me and working out almost every day of the year, you need to be sure these mistakes don’t push you back. Don’t make them in the first place and ensure your fitness regime lasts for as long as your body will carry you. Got any more tips or mistakes we should all avoid?
