Seven steps to start your day right

Need a way to kick start your day, but don’t know where to start? These are the seven steps I live by, every day of my life. They open the mind, prep the body for the day ahead, and set the tone for the next 24 hours. Start each day with these seven steps and see how they change your mood and propel you towards smashing your health goals.

Step one: Don’t snooze

Set a time you will be waking up, and tell yourself that snoozing is not an option. Make a decision on when to start your day, and stick to it. The snooze is tempting, but it isn’t worthwhile for the mind.

Step two: Stretch

Stretching has so many health benefits, and stretching as you first get out of bed in the morning is certainly a good way to go. It keeps your joints and muscles flexible, aids in stress relief, awakens your body and improves on your circulation after a night sleeping. Now who doesn’t like that sound of that!? No-one. it’s a very healthy way to start the day.

Step three: Drink water

Your body is parched when you wake up. You have just spent 7–8 hours without drinking, it will be begging you to replenish it. Don’t reach for the tea or coffee first thing as you step into the kitchen — drink a glass or two of water first. Wake up with H20, not caffeine.

Step four: Eat breakfast

Don’t skip this meal. Breakfast kick-starts your body, revs your metabolism and helps you burn calories during the day. Many benefits exist for eating a morning meal, so get chomping! Make time for it — you won’t regret it.

Step five: Music

Whether that be upbeat music, calming and relaxing music — whatever it is, put it on, and set the mood for the day. Whatever you choose, be sure it makes you feel good and charges your morning. Music can be such a mood booster!

Step six: No mobile devices

That’s right. TURN OFF your phone notifications. The phone does not need to be off, but switch it to “do not disturb” mode. Those people who need to reach you can still do that, but you won’t be distracted by social media, or phones buzzing.

Step seven: Read something

Whatever that is — newspaper, poetry, book — reading of a morning switches on the mind and encourages you to use focus on only the words on the page. Don’t be distracted by the world around you. Soak it in and enjoy the minutes you spend just reading.
