Losing weight and cutting back is all about planning.

Are you baffled as to why you aren’t making progress with your health and fitness goals?

There are some crucial reasons as to why you may have stalled, or worse, be going backwards. One of those might be your extra eating habits.

You heard me, EXTRA habits — and you might not realise you’re the victim of it.

We’re surrounded by triggers to eat more, from those two-for-one offers at the petrol station, to a free meal up-size at your favourite takeout restaurant.

At the same time, we’re bombarded by messages of “eat less” by health professionals and fitness peers — so how on earth are we all supposed to manage that imbalance of opinion?

Let me tell you a few tips and tricks to help you get passed those moments of “extra eating” and recognise when eating less is something you shouldn’t force or feel bad about.

Make your own decision

Suit yourself, as they say. Know your hunger before you approach the counter and make your own decision on the size of your meal, or an extra snack. Don’t let the food outlet tell you how much food you need. Listen to your appetite and make the call — be proud f it, and stick to it. Not being swayed by both marketing and the sales rep selling you the “up-size” is the best thing for you.

Keep clear of triggers

If you know you’re easily swayed, keep clear of the triggers. You can force yourself into eating less by avoiding the thing you can’t say no to.

Position yourself away from the snacks at parties or walk a different way if you know you have to enter the supermarket when you pass by because you ‘can’t help yourself’.

Choose smaller sizes

Again, another super simple concept, but we tend to eat what is in front of us, right? I know I do, so let me pass on a tip — have smaller portions!

Buy the snack packs of your favourite crisps, or portion out your bag of bikkies into a bowl, with the actual suggested serving size (not the handfuls you usually mindlessly take).

You’d be surprised how much of a difference this makes to your extra eating habits.

Use these tips to change your habits for the better.

You don’t have to say no every time, but be aware of how many times you say yes. Those extra habits you think are innocent at the time do add up, and they could be sabotaging your goals.

Be more aware of your decisions, and start to feel good about taking control of your goals.
