Is Your Coffee Habit Ruining Your Diet?

Most of us love a cup of coffee (or ten) in the morning.

But you’ll see that I always drink my coffee black. Completely naked without anything added.

Why? Let me take a step back and explain.

Coffee may have potential health benefits, and acts as a great buzz before a workout, but how many of you drink it straight?

I would say that the majority love their coffee milky and flavoured… jump right in if I’m wrong!

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with adding your favourite milk or flavour combos to your coffees, if you’re on a journey to health and wanting to lose extra weight, this could be hindering your progress.

It’s one of those things that we all do day-to-day. “It’s just here and there. Another latte won’t hurt, it’s only a cup.”

But that cup is costing you precious calories!

Milky coffee bumps up calories as milk isn’t exactly low in those, and more than one a day could be adding over 600 calories to your diet without you tracking, or realising you’re sabotaging your goals.

Let me break it down:

Small Coffee

  • Long black — 3 calories (next to nothing)
  • Skim latte — 70 calories
  • Full milk latte — 115 calories

Medium Coffee (the most popular size!)

  • Long black — 3 calories
  • Skim latte — 100 calories
  • Full milk latte — 175 calories

Large Coffee

  • Long black — 3 calories
  • Skim latte — 135 calories
  • Full milk latte — 230 calories

All Aussie sizes, and only using the milk specified.

You can see that your daily medium latte could be adding a LOT of calories without you really noticing!

You can counter this and still get your coffee fix by substituting your milk choice (almond milk is half the calories of skim!)

Or, like me, you can adapt to a long black. I say adapt, as it did take me a while, but now I don’t drink coffee any other way. Whatever you choose, now you know and can make better choices for your goals.
