We tend to be creatures of habit and buy the same foods every time we grocery shop, did you know that?

If you want to start making healthier choices, a great place to begin that journey is by substituting some of your usual pre-packaged goods for fresh and wholesome options instead — right in the grocery store.

I have my favourite snacks that I always pick off the shelves, but I am certain I could also be making a healthier choice. Instead of choosing the packages apricot bites, rolled in coconut that I love so much, I could just eat an actual apricot… get what I mean?

Tiny little tweaks can help — here are a few options to get you thinking.

Swap packet candy for nature’s candy

By nature’s candy, I mean FRUIT. The sweet tasting, fresh and wholesome version of the packeted taste we crave so much.

There really isn’t a need to be stuffing our faces with candy, when there is an abundance of fresh, seasonal options to hit the sweet tooth. Try blueberries or raspberries in the summer, and perhaps a crisp apple or juicy pear in the cooler months. Works a treat!

Crackers aren’t all bad

The regular crackers you love so much (like ‘Shapes’ or ‘Clix crackers’), aren’t exactly the healthiest snack option. They contain little to no fibre, and a whole tonne of fat… it’s what makes them taste oh so good (I love them both!)

But you can still get your crunch fix from a cracker. Try to find a ‘flax’ or ‘quinoa’ version. The health food section of the supermarket should stock them — you just have to find one you like.

Want cream with that? No!

We all do it sometimes. We add in the whipped cream with the hot chocolate, or the spray creams with our desserts.

If you want a quick and easy substitute, don’t do it at all, and get your fat fix from things like coconut oil. It isn’t the same (stay with me here), but it has the same effect.

If a creamier hot chocolate is what you’re after, drop in some coconut oil. It will cream the drink in no time. If spray creams are more your style — I don’t really have a solution there except pay attention to your portions.

Keep it to once a fortnight, and try not to over-do the use. Those calories add up! If you’re looking to be healthier, there are definitely more wholesome ways to get your creamy fix.

If you want to start making healthier choices, start in your next grocery shop.

It is really easy to do, and you can start small. Those small changes will add up to big results over time, if you do it consistently.

Before you know it, you won’t reach for the packet foods anymore — you won’t want them. Don’t let yourself get stuck in old habits; change them and start making healthier choices, today.
