Daegu, the new city.
So every time I went to Korea, everyone has told me to checkout Daegu. So far, I have been to Seoul, Busan, Jeonju, and Daejeon. Honestly, Daegu doesn’t have a lot to it. I mean, there are things to see but it really isn’t a touristy place.
I stayed in an AirBnB with this one girl. She has used AirBnB many times to travel and wanted to give back by opening her home to others. It was a small apartment with one bedroom (with a door and lock) and a loft area (my “room”). This was definitely one of the most strange arrangements I have had with AirBnB. I have almost always had a private room and I have seen listings where a woman who lives alone will only rent out to another woman. She welcomed and was a very friendly person.
This place was like a bohemian spot. She seemed to be a somewhat atypical Korean as she seemed to be pretty liberal. Looking around her place I saw various items from different parts of Europe like flags, books, posters, etc. She had a lot of art supplies and a few paintings and doo-dads she made. She was very fun to talk to and I even made some Banana Pancakes one day. She enjoyed it very much.
I met up with an old friend that I met in Austin who moved back to Korea. He was only in Austin for a year. We became good friends and we went and got dinner and beer in Daegu.
Honestly, it was nice to be in Daegu cause I was able to essentially get away from it all. Daegu is still a city of around one million people but it wasn’t the tourist hotbed that Seoul is. I felt like I got to experience real Korea while here.
