Where Are You, Summer?

It’s that time of the year, when all you want to do is finish the semester. With that feeling comes the longing for summer.

The idea of summer means many things to different people, but there are some things that hold true for all summers.

1. Sleeping In

No alarms. 2 p.m. sounds like a good time for breakfast.

2. No School and No Expectations

No explanations; you would never walk into a classroom again, just the best time away from learning (and losing all of the knowledge you did learn.)

3. The Sunny Days

Walking outside without the threat of rain, snow, frostbite or allergies makes you just want to frolic in a field of grass.

4. Shorts

No jeans, no problems.

5. You Finally Get to See Your Friends Again

Hanging out with the fam, catching up on the time that you’ve spent apart, but also somehow trying to one each other up.

6. The Beach

Living on the East Coast I have been blessed to look forward to the warm day trips to the beach.

7. Eating Whatever (But Spending Too Much Money on It)

Chipotle & pizza; the downfall of any restless young adult sitting in front of their TV or computer for too long, but you don’t realize how it all adds up.

8. Adventures

From summer traditions to new fun things, somehow the adventures always make the best memories.

9. The Concerts

Singing those summer anthems with half drunk yet dedicated fans is something you look forward to every summer and it never disappoints.

10. The Baseball

Overpriced Stadium food, people watching and the hope that this season was better than last.

But then we get to that point in the summer where you start missing school because of a few things.

1. The Humidity & Heat

You’re self-conscious, sweaty, sticky and on top of that the moment you walked out of your house your hair got two inches taller.

2. Somehow you have ended up watching everything you could possibly watch.

“House of Cards,” “Gossip Girl,” “Orange is the New Black,” “Big Brother,” “Friday Night Lights (x3),” “Awkward,” “Major Crimes,” etc. You’ve watched them all along with the entire Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Twilight series, but somehow still have time on your hands.

3. Somehow your school session starts the latest and all your friends abandon you.

And because you have nothing to watch or to do you just sleep because now you can’t even be bored with your friends.

4. And even if you have a job you somehow still end up going broke.

You enter the summer saying this is going to be the year you’re going to change and save your money. But somehow you end up going to Chipotle, the movies and shopping way too often.

But all-in-all Summer is a time to relax, decompress, be bored, hang with friends and have fun. It’s less than two months away and it’s going to be the greatest time. Embrace your freedom, have fun and experience something new, because school will be back in session before you know it.
