About
I am Belle Gill. I am a student and an aspiring writer. I love consuming popular media and dreaming about places I will visit someday. I identify as a lesbian and often write about my perspective on issues as a queer person.
“It shows us the sights and values and issues that we might ordinarily ignore; but it also, and more deeply, shows us all the parts of ourselves that might otherwise grow rusty.” — Pico Iyer
I love this quote by Pico Iyer on why we travel. Travelling rekindles a deep sense of wonder in me that daily life seems to dull. All of a sudden, mundane things, like walking down streets or even public transport seem infinitely more exciting.
Watching the sunset from the top of the San Cristobal Hill in Santiago is more entrancing than looking at it from my room window could ever be. I suddenly become hyperaware of the environment around me and even my own behavior when I am in a foreign place. It’s a strange and interesting feeling.
So I travel to chase the feeling of wonder and joy that being in new places brings out in me. Being in new and unfamiliar environments often leads to moments of introspection for me. While striving to know the unknown, somehow my mind offers up new ideas and thoughts I never had.
This blog will be focused on writing about a queer person’s perspective on travelling in San Francisco. This city has a rich LGBTQ+ history and I think it would be interesting to analyse it through the Going Places subject.
