My Selection — Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

This is to the book that made me laugh and cry.

Aristotle and Dante are two very well known names across the globe however, I think they’re probably less well known as the two fictional Mexican-American teenage boys who struggle with all aspects of growing up.

Published in 2012, “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” received critical acclaim and was the recipient of 10+ awards and honours within a year.

If you’ve ever read the book, you may understand why.

The story follows 15-year-old Aristotle “Ari” in the summer of 1987 where he meets Dante. Ari is lonely and miserable, struggling with his family relationships and his identity as a Mexican-American. Dante is more light-spirited, eloquent, and introduces Ari to art and poetry. The boys, bond over their names and, despite their differences, become inseparable.

The story is split into six sections with each following the growth of the boys as they discover more about the world around them and more about who they are in themselves.

It is difficult to talk about the story without spoiling it for those who haven’t read it. The book deals with topics such as loneliness, trauma, relationships, friendships, death, love and so much more. For me, the book is a masterpiece.

I know this article is short, but really, I don’t feel like I could do the book justice by writing about it, only by encouraging you to discover the secrets of the universe for yourself.
