Former West Virginia lawmaker Derrick Evans was part of the mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. On the other side of the barricades, Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn defended the Capitol from rioters on Jan. 6, 2021.

Evans, a Republican, wants to make his path to the halls of Congress permanent.

Dunn, a Democrat, was repulsed by what he saw. The Maryland resident watched lawmakers he had protected vote to acquit former President Donald Trump. He saw them deny the violence and trauma that led to the deaths of some of his fellow officers.

Dunn, a Democrat from Maryland, wants to avenge his friends and bring greater sanity to the halls of Congress.

Last Tuesday, Evans and Dunn made bids for U.S. House seats in their respective state primaries. The fact that neither won their primaries is irrelevant. Each came into the elections with different interpretations of what happened that day. Tuesday’s West Virginia and Maryland primaries show us how each party’s voters’ opinions about the attack and its meaning have evolved. They also…
