For parents of transgender children, the time has come for hard choices

When push comes to shove, we have to make hard choices.

If you've always surrounded yourself with progressive, open-hearted, educated people, you'll have an easier time telling the world your child is trans.

If you built your social circles around entitled, rich, regressive, authoritarian, bigoted people, people who hide behind religion to indulge in misogyny, racism and queerphobia, then you'll find yourself in a bit of a pickle.

Because if you hang with that crowd, the expectation is that you'll deliver straight, cisgender, god-fearing, conformist and obedient children to the community.
The expectation is that if your children "stray from the righteous path," you'll "set them straight" (notice how the wording fits?)

So if your child is queer — or, god forbid, trans, and you don't endeavor to "fix" them, then YOU are the one straying. You're the one "enabling this sinful nonsense."
And you become the target.
