Embrace Faith to Overcome Fear
Grow into Your Best New Self
Ah, fear, that crippling fear. It’s a sensation we’ve all experienced, isn’t it?
That sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, the nagging voice of doubt in your mind. Feeling forever frozen instead of eternal salvation joy.
But defeating that fear is not about categories of fear. It’s about facing something deeper and more sinister.
All fear stems from the stuff we don’t talk about—the hurts we bury, the doubts we have about getting better, and whether God even cares about us. That last one was huge for me.
Three worldly views of fear
Let’s use the example of the fear of repeating past mistakes or sins. To really deal with that, we need to get at the root of it, where and who it comes from. The world's way says we are the captains of our own souls, and we must save ourselves from danger or perform flawlessly for approval on the world stage.
- Fear of Failure: Past mistakes can create a fear of failure, where individuals worry that if they repeat their errors, they’ll experience the same negative outcomes. This fear can stem from a desire to avoid disappointment, embarrassment, or feelings of inadequacy.
- Loss of Control: People may fear repeating past mistakes because it can feel like losing control over their lives or circumstances. They may worry that history will repeat itself, leading to a sense of helplessness or powerlessness in shaping their future.
- Damage to Self-Image: Repeating past mistakes can damage one’s self-image and confidence. Individuals may fear that their mistakes define them or that others will judge them harshly for their perceived lack of progress or growth. This fear of tarnishing their self-image can be a significant barrier to moving forward.
The Christian view of fear
- Fear of Failure: Forgiveness and redemption exist through faith in Jesus. God’s grace covers our failures, and we find strength in Him to learn from past mistakes and move forward with hope, knowing that failure does not have the final word.
- Loss of Control: Trusting (faith) in God’s sovereignty alleviates the fear of losing control. God is in control of all things and works all things together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28). This belief provides comfort and assurance that even when faced with uncertainty or repeating past mistakes, we can trust God’s plan and provision. *We know we love Him is a fact because He first loved us.
- Damage to Self-Image: Our Christinusity identity is rooted in being children of God and being made new (without sin)in Christ. Believers are “a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17). Our worth and identity are not defined by (past) mistakes (because the old self died) but by our relationship with God. Through Christ’s victory over sin and death, we believers find healing and restoration, allowing us to let go of shame and embrace our true identity as beloved children of God. There is no shame in being God’s kid!
Faith in God’s Love
We are in the world not of it, dead to sin, alive to God.
There is no fear in love [dread does not exist]. But perfect (complete, full-grown) love drives out fear, because fear involves [the expectation of divine] punishment, so the one who is afraid [of God’s judgment] is not perfected in love [has not grown into a sufficient understanding of God’s love].1 John 4:18 AMP
By stepping into the fullness of who we are in Christ, we realize we are anchored by Him in God’s love. Any fear that dares approach us, we give to the Father. We don’t even need to deal with it.
That, brothers and sisters in Christ, is choosing faith over fear, trusting in the power of God’s perfect love to transform our lives.
