My River Has Been Taken Over by Sexual Predators
It’s 2025 and women still can’t walk where women want to walk
Back in 2020, before I moved to Spain, certain events in Melbourne made it a fairly unpleasant place to be. Something that kept me sane during that time was walking along the river near where I lived. Now I’m back, I’ve been looking forward to revisiting my river. But I’m told it’s been invaded by sexual predators.
I’m furious!
Women have been warned against walking there alone, even in daylight, because there are people (men) lurking in bushes and behind trees waiting to jump out and assault us.
So once again it’s women who are made to restrict their movements rather than men being made to stop their illegal, rapey activities.
It’s such a beautiful walk along that river. Even though you’re close to the city, the trees block the sound of cars and you really feel like you’ve gotten away from it all. Birds chime like bells in the eucalyptus trees and you can see furry animals — sometimes rats and sometimes prettier native ones like possums. (Australian possums are way prettier than American ones.)
