They get away with everything.
This has been a long time coming. These Right-Wing Evangelical Fundamentalist Christian Nationalist groups are detrimental to the health of children who suffer under the abuse heaped upon them, but they are detrimental to all members involved. If you are not familiar with the PoP charismatic movement, you’re not alone. To put it in perspective, think of it as a smaller scaled-down version of Scientology and Heaven’s Gate cult minus the Kool-Aid.
PoP is a male-led and dominated cult because of course it is. Why wouldn’t it be? Some of the most thorough and competent abusers are men so they get to keep the title. It takes women underneath them who support them which is what keeps this house of cards up and functioning. Shame on them all.
The cult membership consists mostly of Catholics and some Protestants so long as they agree to sign the church covenant of the covenant community. The covenant community acts as an ecumenical parachurch. They were established in Indiana and have a membership of one thousand seven hundred.
Doesn’t sound like a huge membership but what are the odds that one of our Supreme Court Justices came from this very movement? Amy Coney Barrett was approved by the Federalist Society and appointed by Donald Trump.
They have since scrubbed their website of any shred of her existence or presence because that’s what totally innocent people with nothing to hide would do. My question is, will she recuse herself from weighing in on any case against the People of Praise cult if and when they are brought before the Supreme Court? Inquiring curious minds would like to know.
The founders of this cult, Kevin Ranaghan and Paul DeCelles, came out of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement of 1967 which started when a small group of Catholics attended a Pentecostal church service where members laid hands on them, and they both came under the delusion that they were being baptized in the Holy Spirit and were granted the gifts of speaking in tongues and laying on of hands to heal the sick and afflicted.
From this experience came the formation of their own version of this cult in 1971.
Several CCR covenant communities were established around the United States and in the Caribbean. The Word of God community was started in 1970 in Ann Arbor Michigan. True House and People of Praise in 1971 in South Bend Indiana. In 1982, a collection of CCR communities banded together to start the Sword of the Lord and eventually. The Catholic Fraternity of Charismatic Covenant Communities and Fellowships in 1990 for Catholic members only.
Feeling confused yet? That’s ok, hang in there. We will only focus on PoP for this article.
The PoP covenant:
Therefore, we covenant ourselves to live our lives together in Christ, our Lord, by the power of his spirit. We agree to be a basic Christian community, to find within our fellowship the essential core of our life in the spirit, in worship and the sacraments, spiritual and moral guidance, service, and apostolic activity. We accept the order of this community, which the Lord is establishing with all the ministry gifts of the Holy Spirit, especially with the foundational ministry gifts of apostles, pastors, prophets, teachers, and evangelists. We agree to obey the direction of the Holy Spirit manifested in and through these ministries in full harmony with the Church. We recognize in the covenant a unique relationship one to another and between the individual and the community. We accept the responsibility for mutual care, concern, and ministry among ourselves. We will serve one another and the community as a whole in all needs: spiritual, material, financial. We agree that the weekly meeting of the community is primary among our commitments and that we will not be absent except for a serious reason. -People of Praise
Disgusting practices
The way these covenant communities work is that they have their own schools called Trinity schools so that they can be indoctrinated into the cult more thoroughly than even their parents were.
People of Praise practices a form of spiritual direction that involves the supervision of a member by a more “spiritually mature” person called a “head”. Basically, whoever is assigned to be “head” of a particular household, will become the Shepherd. It would be like the Apostle Paul living with Christian households as he made his missionary trips.
The “head” of the household was to be given the highest authority and respect. He would counsel the entire family in all things such as interpersonal relationships, dating, spiritual matters, and how the family should conduct itself. The “head” would make the medical decisions and what doctor they would go to see for any reason. Sometimes an entire family would be split up and sent to live with other counselors to ensure they got the “Best spiritual counsel”. The “Head” could decide if you were allowed to talk to or interact with your neighbors. They decide what friends you have. He could even make the call as to who would be staying with the family. Sometimes a single woman or man would get assigned to a family to stay.
Some of the survivors who have left the cult describe details of abuse, shaming, shunning, intimidation, bullying and if you stepped out of line on any issue, retaliation.
This cannot be allowed to continue. Shut down every branch pending an investigation.
