Summertime is coming up and it’s no secret that sunscreen is one of the most essential products that you have to pack in your beach bag. Most people believe that sunscreen is only meant for sun protection and to prevent sunburn. However, multiple studies have found that the daily use of sunscreen even on regular, non-beach days can actually support anti-aging. If you are curious about the extensive benefits of sunscreen, how to choose the right sunscreen for you, and how to properly apply it, then keep on reading. If you would like to learn more about beauty tools and skincare regimen, feel free to head over here for more skincare solutions tailored to your needs.

Benefits

Protects sensitive skin from sunburn

SPF or sun protection factor absorbs Ultraviolet rays (UV) from the sun, which causes sunburn, redness and peeling.

Prevents inflammation and irritation

By shielding the skin from UV rays, sunscreen prevents the after effects of prolonged sun exposure such as inflammation and irritation.

Lowers risk of skin cancers

UV rays are one the biggest contributors to developing skin cancer. Prolonged exposure to the sun with no sun protection increases your risk, therefore using SPF regularly can help lower this risk.

Keeps skin tone even

With sunburn and inflammation, the skin can change colors. A great tan is amazing, but for those who struggle with acne, this can lead to post-acne hyperpigmentation. Sunscreen is a simple solution to prevent dark acne marks and scarring.

Prevents premature skin aging

Sunburn, redness, irritation, uneven skin tone, all contribute to the appearance of aging. UV rays cause wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of elasticity. By using sunscreen with the appropriate SPF regularly, you prevent all the negative effects of sun exposure, ultimately preventing premature skin aging.

Choosing the right type of sunscreen

Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen

Mineral sunscreen acts as a physical shield that sits on your skin and reflects UV rays with the help of ingredients like zinc oxide. Chemical sunscreen absorbs UV rays and converts it into heat using ingredients like oxybenzone. Choosing between these two types of sunscreen ultimately depends on how your skin reacts with each. A patch test is always recommended when trying new skincare products.

SPF

How much do you really need? Well this depends on how much sun you are going to be exposed to. For beach or pool days, choose sun protection that has more than 50 SPF. Some sunscreens even go up to 100 SPF, which would be great for long days under the sun or if you happen to play outdoor sports.

A common misconception about sunscreen is that you don’t need to apply it on gloomy days or if you are just spending time indoors. This is false, because UV rays can still penetrate windows in rooms or cars. For low sun days, you may opt for a sunscreen with 15–30 SPF.

Lotion, Spray on, or Stick

Lotion sunscreens are the most common form that sunscreen comes in. This would provide the best coverage if applied well due to it’s formulation. Spray sunscreens are great for reapplication for the body as they are quick and easy to apply. A modern innovation are sunscreen sticks which are great for reapplying on the face because they are mess free and convenient to carry around anywhere.

How to Apply

To properly apply sunscreen, go about your regular skincare routine. Cleanse, add your serums, and moisturizer. Make sure to let each layer absorb before moving on to the next step of your skincare routine. Finally, when everything has absorbed well into your skin, apply three finger fulls of your favorite sunscreen. This is the recommended amount by dermatologists.

For your body, make sure to apply sunscreen to every corner evenly to prevent unnecessary sunburn in different places. Both facial and body sunscreen must be reapplied every 1–2 hours if you are going to be under the harsh sun. For days spent indoors, sunscreen can be reapplied at least every 4 hours, if you are working next to a window.

In conclusion, there are many reasons to incorporate sunscreen into your daily routine. The main benefits are to prevent sunburn, lower skin cancer risk, and as an anti-aging measure. Choosing the right sunscreen depends on whether mineral or chemical sunscreen works better for your skin. For days under the sun, SPF 50 or higher must be used and reapplied throughout the day. For indoor days, an SPF 30 would suffice but must still be reapplied. Use these tips to guide you for your next skincare haul and start giving your skin the love it needs!
