7 Style Equations that Add Up to Big Savings

You probably already have a wardrobe with a variety of different styles, colors and textures. Why not combine them?

If you already have a tunic top, then you can wear this piece over a long sleeved jumper dress, or match with your pleated skirt, or cropped flare pants. With tunic tops, you can layer your way to a night on the town regardless of the weather.

Another money-saving option can make chic look effortless: the shirt and A-line knit sweater combo. Again, you probably have this in your wardrobe, so feel free to mix and match. Wear the shirt untucked, showing just enough cuff. The knit creates a silhouette over your button-up blouse that is both flattering and striking, especially if you have a good contrast in colors.

Layering your clothes is a skill. That means anyone can learn it and pull it off without looking out of your mind.

2- Accessorize to Customize

Some girls seem to be able to pull off any look and get away with it. Maybe they only wear jeans and a plain T-shirt, but it works. The secret? They’ve mastered the art of accessorizing.

Accessories can be had for any budget, and some really nice pieces are available for absolute bargains. You probably already have a few pieces that you picked up at thrift shops, or from online stores.

Accessorizing is what separates the chic and stylish from the drab and dull, but there’s a fine line between elegance and tack.

Jewelry pieces show off your creativity and taste. Add color to a plain outfit by wearing large, bright earrings. These highlight your face, making a dramatic statement of your personal style. Also, long beaded necklaces or chains make you look taller. Be creative, but don’t overdo it.

3- Sometimes, a Bag is All You Need

The best part about having a closet full of clothes, accessories and bags is the fact that you already have the pieces to the puzzle.

As a rule, your handbag should summarize the fashion statement you’re trying to make with your outfit. While it should complement, it should never clash.

A good tote bag adds fun to your outfit. These can match your clothes within the spectrum of casual wear to your work clothes — pretty much anything except evening gowns and other formal attire.

Casual handbags, especially the increasingly popular satchels, are known for their stylish practicality, so choose one that goes well with your clothes. Patterned bags should match with at least one dominant color of your outfit, and not clash with other patterns you have on.

Bags are a practical way to take your style to the next level.

4- Stand Up Straight.

Your mother probably told you to do this when you were still growing up. She was right.

Sure, we tend to think that tall people look stylish, and we probably can’t pinpoint why. Your posture plays an important role in appearance, suggesting clues about health, prosperity, and power. By improving your posture, you immediately improve your appearance, and it’s completely free of charge.

Your outside appearance can affect how you feel inside. Good standing posture works wonders when trying to make a first impression. Sitting upright has tremendous health benefits as well. Standing tall helps you burn more calories, reduce back pain, and improve your circulation.

Make a conscious effort to stand with your shoulders back, using your core muscles to keep your torso straight. When you sit, keep your head straight and again, keep your shoulders back in a relaxed fashion. You’ll look better and feel better.

5- Style Involves Planning

If you want to look good, you’ve got to think things through. Sure, it’s possible for an outfit that’s thrown together to look good, but the chances of that happening are less than ideal. Planning ahead solves a lot of style problems.

Free time on the weekends can be spent planning outfits for the next day or two. This includes doing laundry, pressing blouses and skirts, and putting them together on hangers. Not only does this help you coordinate your colors, but also to save time getting ready.

As for buying new clothes, it doesn’t matter whether you’re shopping at the mall or on your favorite e-commerce site: when you see a piece of clothing that grabs your attention, pick out a couple other things you can wear with it. This applies especially if the item has a unique pattern, color or texture, and doesn’t match your current wardrobe.

6- Household Hacks

So your favorite skirt caught a snag. No need to throw it out, especially if it goes with everything. And don’t let a missing button stand between you and looking your best. Needle and thread go a long way, and you don’t need a course in home ec to keep your clothes looking good.

If your best white shirt has discolorations or stains, try lemon juice or baking soda to freshen up your threads. Shaving cream gets rid of foundation stains, and hairspray obliterates lipstick.

Meanwhile, your expensive leather shoes can benefit from other household items. Vinegar removes water stains, and petroleum jelly restores patent leather. Even suede can be cleaned if you buff the surface with a nail file.

Broken zippers are the bane of many a wardrobe, but bar soap or petroleum jelly helps them slide more easily.

7- Confidence Reinforces Style

This is another upgrade to your style that is absolutely free of charge. Feeling good about yourself is probably the most important element to appearing stylish and confident. Your wardrobe should be something you’re happy with, and reflect who you are and where you’re going in life. Expensive clothes cannot overcome fear and other negative thoughts, so work on yourself and the rest will follow.
