Ethics and MyData — from theory to practice
With the rapidly growing popularity of data-driven and intelligent products and services, also the dark side of data collection, especially personal data, has become evident. Targeted adverts become more and more intrusive, and masses of personal data are even used to influence voting behaviour.
Using personal data without consent or even against the person’s wishes is often called unethical. As a solution, terms such as Data Ethics and AI Ethics have surfaced recently, along with requests for more transparency, accountability and fairness in algorithmic systems. But what does ethics actually mean in this context, and what kind of practical guidance could it offer for personal data processing?
The Ethical Processing of MyData track in the MyData 2017 conference will explore both theoretical and practical aspects of ethics related to MyData. The track program combines philosophical expertise with a number of positive and negative examples of ethical and transparent handling and use of personal data.
The track consists of the following sessions:
- Ethics of MyData and AI dives into the ethical questions raised by the development of AI and other data-intensive applications. We will learn how to design intelligent products and services that use data in a sustainable and ethical manner.
- Connecting MyData to Ethics and Philosophy covers the main philosophical and ethical frameworks to set a practical discussion on the ethical processing of MyData.
- Workshop on MyData Transparency showcases the work of the Data Transparency Lab and aims to facilitate connections towards the MyData community.
- Personal Data Transparency provides the what, why, who, and how of transparency and a discussion of its relationship to ethical processing of MyData.
The track aims to create a better foundation for discussion of ethical issues rising from processing of personal data. It will lead to a clear and focused research and policy agenda along with recommended features and practical solutions for MyData products and services.
