Many people see their online data trail as a liability to be obliterated rather than an asset to be guarded. The personal data store or “data locker” is a service that lets an individual manage, store and share their data in a more secure manner. Users can analyse their own spending patterns, quickly and accurately update important changes, and engage with e-commerce and public services on their own terms.

To help sort through it all William Heath, Chairman of Mydex and former Chair of the Open Rights Group, will share his vision for the future of personal data in a lunchtime seminar at The Young Foundation. In conversation with Simon Tucker, Chief Executive of the Young Foundation, William will lay out the challenges and opportunities of online data, paying special attention to the role of social enterprises in particular. Of course, it’s not just individuals that have to deal with the ever increasing flow of data online and the resultant offline ramifications.

It raises a multiplicity of public policy issues, from the government’s approach to open data to cost efficiency. Elsewhere businesses will have to adjust their technology and their approach to sales, as well as taking control of their own data trails. The government is pushing private businesses to release data to consumers upon request, but it is social enterprises that will be in the vanguard of this profound change.
