Don’t lose your ENS domain! Renew with MEW’s ENS Manager

Remember when you got yourself an awesome decentralized ENS domain and started using your .eth name to receive funds, to build decentralized websites, and, possibly, to embellish your handle on Twitter?

It was a smart decision. We’re sure that you and your domain have had a great run, and to keep those good times rolling, it’s time to renew it.

ENS domains have been around for a while — since May 2017, to be exact — and the process for registering a domain was different at first. If you were among the earlier adopters, you may have participated in an auction to bid for your domain.

Then, in May 2019, the ENS process was changed, transitioning to instant registration and an annual fee model. If you purchased a domain at that point, through MEW or elsewhere, you paid the fee for a year. If you already owned a domain before the May 2019 switch, you got a free year of registration.

Either way, that year ended on May 4th, 2020, and domain names are starting to expire. Once a domain expires, there is a 90-day grace period to renew it, otherwise the name will again become available to the public.

MEW makes it easy

Now, maybe when we asked if you remembered how you got a domain, you don’t actually recall the details. That’s ok. When you access your wallet in MEW, if you do have domains that need renewing, you will get an alert.

From here, proceed to the ENS Manager, choose the Manage tab, and you should see a list of all domains associated with this wallet. You will see Renew buttons next to the expiring domains — click through to the Renew page, choose the length of time for which you’d like to extend your domain ownership (you will see total price calculated), and then click Renew. That’s it!

Annual fees for domains depend on the length of the name: $5/year for names 5 characters or longer, $160/year for 4 characters, and $640/year for 3 characters. Keep in mind that you will need to renew the domains you wish to keep every year — but don’t worry, MEW will remind you again when your domain names are expiring a year from now.

If you first got your ENS domain before the registry change, with the auction and deposit-return model, you can get your original deposit back from the old system. Go to Manage Domain, click Release Deed, and then click Return.

To find out more about the renewal process and find answers to questions such as why the registration model was changed, why there are annual fees, and how they are used — go to the ENS blog.

Renew your domains and keep on decentralizing!
