After the Ethereum network officially launched in the summer of 2015, MyEtherWallet’s first website went live just a couple of weeks later. The simple yet effective interface helped the first Ethereum users — both technically advanced developers and inexperienced enthusiasts — generate wallets and access their ETH.

From the beginning, MEW opened up the world of Ethereum to people beyond the original community of developers who built it. Now, we want to do the same for the growing ecosystem of multichain networks and give their communities a secure, intuitive, and beautiful way to interact with their favorite web3 applications.

Enkrypt and Web3

The Enkrypt browser extension was created by MEW through a collaboration with the Web3 Foundation and Parity Technologies, organizations that support development and foster innovation in blockchain, specifically on the Polkadot ecosystem. In building Enkrypt, we applied our seven years of experience in the space: everything we’ve learned about security, user experience, and flexibility — to keep up with the fast-paced change in the world of crypto.

On release, just as MEW’s Ethereum users would expect, Enkrypt provides support for Ethereum, Polygon, Binance Smart Chain, Ethereum testnets, and, going forward, any Ethereum-based EVM network.

However, what we are especially excited about is Enkrypt’s support for the most popular Polkadot ecosystem chains: Polkadot, Kusama, Acala, Karura, Moonbeam, and Moonriver.

The Polkadot Network

For newcomers to Polkadot, it may be helpful to think of it as an interconnected web of chains, where the Polkadot blockchain is a hub, surrounded by networks called parachains — some popular ones are Acala, Karura, Moonbeam, and Moonriver. Each parachain has its own specialized function or purpose, whether it’s an NFT platform, a gaming environment, or an entire chain dedicated to a stablecoin.

How does this structure work? It allows parachains to handle more transactions with cheaper fees and have specialized features, so that applications built on them can provide a better user experience. Meanwhile, the Polkadot network provides security and stability to the entire system, and creates pathways for the parachains to communicate with each other.

While many of our Ethereum users may hear about the Polkadot ecosystem for the first time through the Enkrypt extension, it has actually been around for quite some time, created by Gavin Wood — one of the original founders of Ethereum. You can learn much more about Polkadot and its parachains through the resources linked below — you might discover your new favorite web3 application or become part of a new crypto community!

The Multichain Future

While MEW has always been — and will always be — an Ethereum-focused wallet, we see the growing numbers of Layer 2s and other smart contract blockchains as a positive, bullish sign for Ethereum scalability. Projects that build decentralized applications will always look for the most flexible and user-friendly places to deploy their code, mint their tokens, and grow their communities.

With multichain support, Enkrypt users will be able to follow their favorite projects wherever they go. The Polkadot ecosystem is just the beginning for Enkrypt, with many more blockchain networks to be supported in the future. No more switching wallets and keeping track of multiple phrases. No more confusion about where you minted and stored that NFT. No more being held back by high fees and confusing interfaces.

We encourage you to download and check out Enkrypt today. Create a new wallet, or import your MetaMask or Polkadot js wallet, see the full guides to using Enkrypt in our help center, and let us know what you think on Twitter and Discord! If you are a developer building on Ethereum, Polkadot, or one of the many exciting chains out there, we would love to see how Enkrypt can help you and your community — fill out our collaboration form and we’ll get in touch. We look forward to building a multichain future together.
