You are an Example or a Warning

I was out for dinner the other night and overheard a group of youngsters seated behind my table, and were loud enough to make me a receptor of the idle chatter.

One asked the other — How is the new job working out? What is your role in the company?

To which the other replied — Decent, I do Business Development. He asked again — Don’t drop in corporate jargons, tell me exactly what you do.

The other replied — Ad sales karta hoon, in short, chu**** banata hoon…

This casual conversation triggered me to think about how people perceive their jobs roles. What do they think they are doing?

Here he was, a Sales Executive in one of the most renowned, new-age tech companies in our country, thinking his job out there was to fool people.

This made me ponder. Is he discrediting the product and the company, or himself, by belittling his own job profile? Where is the conviction? The passion to sell?

These days, Business Development has started getting loosely associated with just doing Sales. There is so much more to it. Business Development significantly implies an all-around, holistic facelift of the internal and external elements of a business. Although Sales contributes to a major part of it, the rest cannot be snubbed.

Sales is not about selling anymore. It’s about building trust and educating. A salesperson is like a priest in a temple, while the product is his God. Just like a priest’s fidelity and resoluteness towards God is unparalleled, similarly, a salesperson should worship his product. Only if he believes in it, can he make others believe in it too. It might sound preachy, but any good sales representative you meet will exude similar characteristics.

In conclusion, how you perceive your job plays a big role in your performance. A barber cannot be allergic to hair and then excel at haircuts. Hence, be mindful of what you think and say because at the end of the day, words cannot be taken back and you never know who is listening.
