The fantasy fairytale kind of wedding hits us girls from the time we are old enough to dress-up in our mother’s clothes, experiment with makeup and stumble around in over-sized heals playing dress up. We than imagine our prince charming! We all come up with an ideal image of how we want our man to look like, his height, his clothes, his image and style and oh yeah his character! We all want him caring yet strong, in love yet in control, impulsive yet logical-basically we make up fantasy images, which let’s face it-they don’t exist! We only come to realise this when we eventually find the ONE! The one is completely different from the facade we had conjured up…and slowly the fantasy fades away.

Nothing is lost though, because together as one we create new dreams — real dreams and thus our lives begin! My fiancé — I love how the word sounds fiancéeee — popped the question in Mykonos, and obviously I said YES! So one of my fantasies did indeed come true you see-I always dreamed that my man would ask me to marry him in Mykonos — ever since I discovered the island existed-when I was 7-it has always been my dream destination! I have come up with a few reasons why Mykonos Island is the most idyllic destination to go down on one knee!

Magical Chora

Inspiring Chora (also known as Mykonos Town), is the island’s magical and romantic capital city and home to its picturesque port. The typical Cycladic-style town exudes romance, which is made up of a warren of cobblestoned alleys, whitewashed buildings with colourful window panels, gardens boasting with bougainvilleas and 16th century rugged windmills. In the heart of the town lies the coastal Venetian neighbourhood, Little Venice, which is breathtaking at sunset. Blue-domed white-washed chapels seem to sprout everywhere adjoined with trendy boutiques, inspiring art galleries, mythology-inspired jewellers and chic bars. Another plus-the island is swamped with Hollywood casts! Welcome to Mykonos, where romance, beauty and glamour are all rolled up in one!

Romantic Spot — Little Venice

Little Venice is the most romantic spot on the island-literally the quaint little quarter is the epitome of romance! Little colourful two-story buildings line the coast with lingering balconies almost touching the sea beneath. Apparently, secret pirates back in the 16th century built these homes as they needed easy access from the sea to hide their treasures. Today, the 16th century Venetian-style buildings have been turned into hip bars and restaurants.

For those looking to pop the question: plan a candlelit dinner on one of the hovering balconies, pop open a bottle of vino and wait till the sun begins to dip into the emerald blue Mykonian sea! Bend on one knee and ask! The whole setting will win her over in a heartbeat!

Magical Spot — Panagia Paraportianni

The most photographed and loved church throughout Greece is by far Papangia Paraportianni. The famed Cycladic structure was built over centuries, as in actuality it is made up of 5 different Byzantine chapels all adjoined. Each chapel was constructed over a different time span.

For those looking to pop the question: take your better half on a romantic stroll through the winding streets of Chora. Make sure you arrive at Panagia Parapotianni around sunset and watch the magical display of natural fireworks fusing together in the sky as the sun hits the sea. Then hit the ground, pop the question and bingo-you’re engaged!

Alternative Spot — Three Wells

Chora is home to three ancient wells linked to many mystical myths. In the past the wells were constructed to supply the entire town with fresh water. Today they are one of Mykonos many ancient landmarks. As rumour has it, whoever is brave enough to sip a drink of water out of all three wells will find their better half on the island.

For those looking to pop the question: let your better half know about the myth surrounding the Three Wells and take her to see them! If you’re looking to be different, try something different then just bending on one knee and asking if she would marry you! Here’s an idea…why don’t you do something symbolic and drink out of the Three Wells? Leave the rest to fate!

Historic Spot — The Windmills

The Mykonion Windmills have long been the island’s most famed trademark. The most famed are the Kato Milloi (Lower Mills) which dot the coast of the island as if still waiting for ships to pass by. The 16th century windmills are a symbol of the island’s past, as they were the source of the locals’ livelihood. Dominating, tall and overwhelming they stand overlooking the azure waters of the Aegean.

For those looking to pop the question: take a tour of the island on foot and end up at the Windmills. Imagine overlooking the breathtaking views of the shimmering blue waters combined with the overwhelming structures of the white-washed Windmills. Hold your better half in your arms, soak in the postcard-like views and ask! She will be spellbound!

Cultural Spot — Delos Island

The most sacred island of antiquity, the place where ancient civilisations prospered, the isle where the gods blessed, the land where culture was created-Delos Island. Delos is an uninhabited island which now resembles a timeless open-air museum filled with treasures traced back to the Greek gods and ancient civilisations.

For those looking to pop the question: take a tour of the sacred island, walk through the ruins of past civilisations, and breathe in the magical air that this land exudes. What better place is there to open your heart and ask the person you love to be with you forever? Believe me there isn’t!
Mykonos is magical…this is the only word that completely captures the essence of Mykonos. Its emerald blue waters shimmer for miles on end, its whitewashed buildings, and cobblestoned alleys, grand-like Windmills, romantic Little Venice and sacred Delos all combine and make up the most romantic destination in the world! What are you waiting for? Take your loved one on a romantic vacation and come back united as one!
