Planning regular date nights is important for any relationship. Whether you’ve been married for years or you’re just starting to get to know each other, you really do need a dating life to keep things interesting and keep the spark alive. No relationship is perfect and all relationships require some work and effort, so why not stay at home and have a date night?

While your typical date night idea may look like an evening of watching Netflix at home, there are plenty of unique and creative date night ideas to spice up your routine. And the best part is, many of these ideas are cheap and won’t break the bank.

Innovative Dating Ideas

Even though we’re spending more time at home today during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to make date nights feel special. You may be wondering, what can couples do for fun at home? There are lots of creative ways to make your at-home date night feel special. Maybe that means dressing up or having a pajama party.

Before you can get your date night going though, it might be time to put the kids to bed. Date night might start around 8 PM or 9 PM, but without the distraction, you two can focus on a romantic few hours together, while never leaving home, and spending very little money to do it. Don’t be afraid to make your at-home date night fun! If you’re wondering what do you do on a stay at home date night here are a few stay-at-home date ideas for couples to get inspired and rekindle the flame!

Spa at home

One of my favorite ways to relax and unwind together is to have an at-home spa date night. Here you can give each other a massage, put on a face mask, light a scented candles or put on an oil diffuser. To make your at-home spa night feel ultra-luxurious, consider slipping into a comfy spa-style robe and slippers. You can even make a pitcher of fruit-infused spa water to stay hydrated and refreshed.

Board Game Date Night

Putting down the phone, turning off both your phones, and focusing on each other while dusting off a few board games you might have lying around is one of the best cheap date night ideas. Challenge each other to a fun evening of competition and several board games, if you have them. Monopoly. Trouble. Sorry. Candy Land. Or even a puzzle. You can make it more interesting by adding a rule that the loser of each game has to lose one piece of clothing or any other interesting conditions. Get inspired with these date night games at home. And don’t forget to light up a few candles and dim the lights!

Cook your partner’s favorite food

This is probably the most ancient way to impress your partner and spend great time with your life-mate. Spend the evening together recreating one of your favorite restaurant meals at home with each other. Grab your favorite cookbook or search for recipes online. Working together, spending time together, learning to have patience with each other, and making a full-blown meal with dessert can go a long way. This can be a fun way to boost your confidence in the kitchen and impress each other with your culinary skills.

Project a movie in the backyard

Yes, you’ll have to invest in a movie projector, but it’s unique and makes for fun entertainment all summer long. If you cannot afford a movie projector, pull out your laptop and watch it together in the backyard. If you’re worried about being outside in the pure darkness, then pitch up a tent, or sleeping bags, and snuggle. In the winter months, you can bring the projector indoors to watch movies or sports games on a blank wall. Lay out a blanket, grab some popcorn or your favorite snacks and drinks. Hang some pretty fairy lights or flameless candles. Get cozy and enjoy your favorite feel-good movies. This has been one of my favorite date night ideas during quarantine.

Painting at home

Paint nights are fun, but they can get expensive. You don’t have to be an artist in order to have your own painting at home date night. Grab some cheap canvases and paint — you can choose oil paint, watercolors, or acrylics. You can look up a painting tutorial on YouTube and paint together at home. Don’t worry if your painting doesn’t look like the original, it’s fun to be creative and express yourself through art. This is a judgement-free zone to enjoy yourselves! If you want to get even more daring and intimate, paint on each other while naked! Get some glow-in-the-dark paints and have some fun!

Video game at night

Most everyone loves a good video game. Hopefully you or your spouse have played some before, but might not always have the time to play. For this night, make the time, and find a game you two can enjoy together! Even if you don’t play video games often, this can be a super fun date night at home by playing classic games from the 90s or new releases, a video game night can definitely spark some friendly competition. If you don’t have a gaming console, surely your neighbor does and can lend you one for the night! This is one of the most romantic date night ideas at home, especially for him. Best of all, if you’re just not feeling sexy, he probably wouldn’t even mind if you skipped out on the sexual intimacy and just enjoyed playing a video game!

Go camping in your living room

To take the camping experience home, you can go pretend camping in your living room or even backyard. Light a fire and eat some s’mores. If you don’t already have a fireplace, don’t hesitate to launch a YouTube video with the full sound effects of a fireplace! If you want to make it even more interesting, in place of a tent, build a fort with the pillows and blankets throughout the house. Tell each other stories or take a stroll down memory lane. Don’t hesitate to play truth or dare! Once you’ve both settled down, bring the massage oil and gently rub each other for an intimate evening. To enhance the effect, keep the mood going with some pretty twinkling lights and you’ll feel like a kid again.

Candlelight dinner

And of course; the candle-light dinner. Transform your usual take-out experience into a romantic evening. Put a tablecloth on the table (or coffee table), light some candles, turn on some chill music, and talk to each other during your meal. If you don’t feel like cooking, splurge a little and order from a nice restaurant, either through UberEats or DoorDash. Many places will have the food to you within an hour and a gourmet meal it will be! This is one of the best last minute at home date night ideas.

Read an inspirational book together

While there are many books you can read alone or together, I personally find myself reading My Life As A Woman: World Edition with my husband. Interesting enough, I am one of the women who participated in the My Life As A Woman Project! To read the stories together is to travel throughout the world without ever leaving your home, and allows us to open up a little discussion about what this woman may have been going through, what she has gone through, and often makes us wonder what she is doing today. In this great book, you’ll find the interesting and detailed stories of over 500 women from 200 countries.

So whatever the dating idea you choose, make your dating time more interesting by enjoying it with your partner.
