On October 5, Black Quay blessed the music world with “Still Grindin’” - a 6-track EP chronicling the hip hop artist’s experiences as a rapper starting out in his Atlanta homebase.

Still Grindin’ by Black Quay

Executive produced by Quay himself and fellow South rap artist and music producer Nash B, the fresh mix serves as an anthem for everyone still grindin’. The songs are filled with lean references to Quay’s initial struggles in making coin doing what he’s passionate in and to an optimistic disposition that hard work reaps true rewards, as well as a few playful bars on life in the rap scene. “Random Thoughts” are anything but; the song is chock full of allusions to having made it using intelligent verses (Pocket was flatter than a sprite left open/ Now they pokin’), while “Hood Hoes” brings a worry-free voice to the mix - further insinuating the luxury of winning (I love them thick and fine, got me crushed and shit).

Lyrical standouts in the EP are debut single “Out The Way” and opening track “Mission”. “Out The Way” is clear in its message that the rap game is not for ones who give up easy (Only the strong survive / This shit ain’t made for the weak), and “Mission” proves that beginnings may be tough but persistence in the play is tougher (They was like eating four meals / They left me their leftovers).

They thought I was gon’ be fucked foreva
I swear my position
I made it through the stormy weather
I guess I was gifted

Cheesy but not banal, the motivational sound of the EP is well-balanced with and tricksy lyrics and doesn’t take away from the project’s true message - that genuine respect and love for music and good work breeds success. Below is Quay’s smart-witted Instagram post that is testament to the rapper’s bright and fun songwriting talent:

Praised for his knack for storytelling and plain realness on the project, Black Quay is confident his constant grind and work on the streets is bound to pay off big time. In his interview with Vintage Media Group, the rapper made a quick mention on how he sees his career and brand evolving to greater fame and acknowledgement, and how he’s not stopping anytime soon; he’s “still grinding [his] way to where [he’s] trying to be.”
