OMB Peezy’s life story, much like his music, is a story of transience. Moving to Sacramento, California as a pre-teen from his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, Peezy’s music is a mix of these two childhoods, set to some rollicking beats that take a little bit from his diverse influences, including collaborators like Nef the Pharaoh, with whom he recorded “Move 4” back in 2017, just before he broke on the scene with his debut EP “Humble Beginnings”, even if the impressive mix was anything but.

He followed this up with his debut mixtape “Young and Reckless”, where he showcases the unique mix of hip-hop tradition his music draws upon. His latest record, however, tightens the focus a little bit, taking a more introspective bent as it paints a portrait of its artist with astounding clarity. Rather than spread itself wide, the mix goes deep, and is no less powerful for it.

Loyalty Over Love by OMB Peezy

Peezy’s lyrical style is akin to unfiltered rambles, doubling down on the raw, erratic introspection that “Loyalty Over Love” sees him fully embrace. The instrumentation is sparse and haunting, fully ceding center stage to Peezy’s frenetic bars, his poetic somersaults. In songs like “Hell” and “Yeah Yeah”, OMB Peezy’s frenetic energy fills the entire soundscape, like a runaway freight train of scattershot observations, adding up to a charged treatise on identity, memory, and the way we process the things we’ve lived through.

The album traffics in uncomfortable truths, and its best songs live in that sort of awkward in-between space, between remembering and wanting to forget. Like Peezy exhorts in the chorus of his banger “Deeper Than You Think”, this is “deeper than you think”. It is the refrain of a man who remains haunted by the things he’s seen and the places he’s been. To a degree, it’s a refrain anyone could relate too, repeated with the fervor of a religious mantra.

OMB Peezy’s latest is an extraordinarily rich record, filled with the eclectic, explosive poetry of a man whose intrusive thoughts find an outlet through the sonic ebbs and flows of his beats and lines, jabs and feints at self-understanding. It’s an amazing album, and it’s streaming right now on My Mixtapez!
