Yungeen Ace’s “Life of Betrayal” is a mix about survival
On June 5, 2018, Yungeen Ace lost three friends in a tragic shooting incident in Jacksonville, Florida, and he himself was shot eight times while trying to shield one of his companions from the gunfire. Only a few months later, and the South Beach maestro is bouncing back with “Life of Betrayal”, a mix that exemplifies the journey of survival that Yungeen Ace went through to emerge from that tragedy, as well as the loss that he still carries with him.
The record, released last August 3, reads like the scattered memoirs of someone who has seen some things, with the fragmented, sketched-out portrayals of violence only amplifying their raw power. Yungeen Ace (twitter|instagram) pairs these fiery lyrics with brutal, swirling beats, blunt and heavy like sledgehammers. In “All In”, he tells a story of money and death, as if those two always went hand-in-hand.
I won’t let them niggas take nothin’ from me
I got some niggas who gon’ shake somethin’ for me
Pop out that splat with that draco
We go crazy about them pesos
All of my niggas we go all in
They posted on the block, we all spin
Catch ’em slippin’, no sparin’, knock him
But when I make it we gon’ all win, we all in
This fascinating mix of glory and tragedy is what characterizes “Life of Betrayal”, a 13-track compilation of stories from a difficult life. Listen to it now, here on My Mixtapez.
