It’s Time to Upgrade to GPT-4o!!
On Monday, 13th May 2024, OpenAI launched its newest addition to the ChatGPT family called GPT-4o, a powerful AI tool that makes real-time verbal conversations with a friendly AI chatbot just like one with a human being.

What is ‘o’ in GPT-4o?
This question has kept many people wondering — why the ‘o’? Well, it stands for Omni. It suggests the beautiful mélange of voice, text and vision into a singular model. The company said that this latest model is twice as fast and efficient compared to its predecessor.
About the New GPT-4o Model:
In a live stream held on Monday, Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati said that the platform is made free for all users. In contrast, the paid users will continue to experience up to five times the capacity limits of free users, bringing intelligence to everything. The update brings a plethora of features for free users. These include the ability to scour the web in seconds for answers to numerous queries, speak to the chatbot empathetically, receive responses in various voices, as well as store details for the chatbot to collect for future use. GPT-4o will be made available in more than 50 languages worldwide.
Another thing to note is that not only is GPT-4o 2x faster but is also 50% cheaper than GPT-4 Turbo, which was released in late 2023. The company has publicly said that it will make the new version of its “voice mode” assistant available to ChatGPT Plus users in the weeks to follow. From what reports by OpenAI state, it can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, making it similar to that of a human response time in a conversation.
Conversing With the New User Interface:
After making it a requirement for users to sign up for accounts at the start of 2024, OpenAI announced a desktop application. It is also intended to make AI tools available to more users across the globe. The mobile app integration allows an iPhone app to upload videos and images for GPT-4o to process.
Towards taking another step to make AI more accessible and beneficial, the company came up with a “refreshed” user interface, which incorporates the ability to have a more human-like conversation with ChatGPT as well as to share videos, files and images with it to further analyse and discuss.
It has also been reported that with the new real-time conversational speech functionality roped in, the prompts can have an emotional touch to them depending on the nature of the query put in.
- Video and Voice Command: One can also include video or live footage on GPT4o. For instance, if there is a complicated math problem that is taking a long time to solve, ChatGPT will directly answer or guide you through the process of how to solve the problem. Another excellent use can be taking a picture of a menu in a foreign language and asking GPT-4o to translate it. By doing this, it will give a gist about the food’s history and significance, as well as other recommendations.
- Uploading Media: It is now possible to upload screenshots, photos and documents with text and images in them and ask ChatGPT to solve the issue you are facing with the same.
- Real-time Interaction: As compared to the previous models, GPT-4o allows for back-and-forth (prior) conversation without waiting for the model to finish its statement.

- Analyse Data and Create Charts: GPT4o can conduct advanced data analysis by uploading charts or codes though the results may not be accurate enough.
Prior to this update, GPT-4, which launched in March 2023, was available via the ChatGPT Plus subscription for a $20 fee to be paid every month. It uses as much as one trillion parameters, or pieces of information, to process queries and accordingly generates the most accurate response.
