Six months at Myntra
My internship story at India’s leading fashion e-commerce
It was after an exhausting wait through September, and halfway into October last year, that I finally got the email I was in anxious anticipation of. I had made my way through the majority of the placement season (seventh semester of college) and was yet to find the opportunity I was looking for. Lots of companies kept streaming in at a steady rate, but I held out, looking for something a bit more particular to my fields of interest. The few opportunities that did pique my interest, had thus far, proved elusive. That was, until Myntra happened.
I still remember my first day, initiation for the interns — a small group of eight nervous, eager faces, huddled into a room. In spite of the raging fever I was fighting on the day, I couldn’t help but be sincerely impressed with my surroundings. The entire design, decor, architecture, the way the place was thought out and built, tickled the designer in me to utter glee. It’s not often that one finds a workplace that really makes you delighted to be there. It wasn’t just about the pretty murals and themed decor either. As I met and interacted with more people, explored the variety of work that is done by teams across the board, it slowly but steadily began to sink in that I was in the right place. (Did I mention the bean bags and free food? ❤ ️)
I was absolutely thrilled when I went home that day, just thinking about the vast expanse of knowledge that I could gain, working alongside people of insanely varied skill sets, all plying their trade at the bleeding edge of their respective fields.
Nine months in, went from an intern to an employee, and that same thrill still drives me.
Myntra is known for a lot of things, but its sincerely impressive tech team often fails to find the spotlight. I interned in the Storefront Mobile team, which was responsible for Myntra’s cross-platform mobile applications. At the time, my mentor, Pawan (one of the most crazily smart people I’ve ever met), helped me get some sort of a roadmap laid down for how I would go about spending my time here. Even though crossing the sheer chasm of difference in my capability, and that required to be productive here, was a daunting ask, Pawan helped me tackle it head on, and backed me with support whenever I needed it. Excited by the magnitude of freedom I was given to explore experimental technologies, and work on anything I chose, I started learning some essential skills in the first few weeks. With invaluable assistance and guidance always available from literally anyone, irrespective of where they worked, I learnt at a rapid rate, overcame seemingly unassailable hurdles, and built a prototype for what went on to be my internship’s final project. I dabbled in exciting fields such as AR, VR, 3D modeling, amongst other things, after which I finally settled on image processing. The aim was to make a virtual trial module, that would allow users to try on personal care products from within the Myntra application. If somebody had told me I’d be making this, same time last year, I would’ve booked them a one way trip to a psych ward. Now, well, check this out.
Myntra is more than just an e-commerce company. It has a certain way, a certain attitude, something we often refer to as Myntra’s culture, that sets it remarkably aside from the crowd. I can’t accurately put it into words. You’d have to experience it. That, is probably because it is best defined by the people who work here.
Wherever you go, the dev community there makes a huge impact on you, and your work. An insatiable hunger for knowledge, constantly striving towards perfection, a humble and open mindset, and a quietly efficient work process that churns out highly quality output, make sure Myntra’s dev community is always moving forward, together, at the tip of the spear.
Considering the apprehensions I had with the abstract mystique surrounding Myntra during college recruitments, I’m really glad I got the opportunity to be here. It was a greatly satisfying experience, that helped me improve in more ways than one, and left me with the desire to strive for more.
If there’s anything more you’d like to know about Myntra, my experience here, or otherwise, feel free to drop me a mail.
