Welcome to our finding focus series. Each month we will focus on a topic to help us be more fulfilled, happier and grateful.

balance

/ˈbal(ə)ns/

  1. a situation in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions.

When we think about balance and wellbeing the first thing that comes to mind is work-life balance. This idea that as individuals we are permanently trying the find the equilibrium between what we do personally and professionally. This perfect space where we spend the exact right of time working vs enjoying our personal freedoms.

For each person, we are told it is different and that you have to find what works for you. In some circumstances, we are told that it is a myth and that if you want to achieve professional greatness, you have to suck it up and work hard until you have the financial freedom to enjoy the fruits of your labour. However, I feel the way we think about work-life balance currently is wrong.

Rethinking balance

The idea of having to balance these 2 parts of ourselves frames it in a way that shows them to be mutually exclusive. By doing more work you have less life or vice versa. But this just isn’t true.

Everything I do in my personal life affects how I work and my work affects how I enjoy my personal life. These two things are so deeply intertwined that they should be seen as complementary rather than balancing. For example, taking some time off, going for a run or maybe just taking a midday walk, means that I won’t be working. But by caring for my mental health and wellbeing through these breaks and I am bringing a better version of myself to the tasks and problems I have at work.

And likewise, with work, spending time to find a career where you love what you do means that your professional life isn’t a chore. By working towards this symbiotic relationship between our working and personal lives, we will find our selves thinking less of balance and more just enjoying the days we have available to us.

Keep going,

Jack
