For those who still cleanse their face with only a facial wash, this article is for you. The double cleansing is done by, well, cleansing your face double time. You have to use two products to clean your face. Let’s get to know about facial cleansers first.

What is a face cleanser?

Face cleanser is used to clean your face from excess dirt on the surface of your skin. It also removes makeup, other, and pollutants residue that accumulates on your skin after you do activities. The main difference with facial wash is that face cleanser doesn’t make any foam and is gentler than facial wash.

Face cleansers are typically formulated in various forms, such as cream, lotion, oil, and water. Face cleanser products you can find are oil cleansers, balm cleansers, and micellar water. In double cleansing, you have to put face cleanser first before facial wash.

What is a face wash?

Facial wash, on the other hand, is the one you usually use with water to produce foam. While face cleansers clean your face on the surface level, facial wash removes the dirt from the deeper layers of your skin and cleans out your pores.

However, facial washes are less hydrating than facial cleansers. Some facial wash products can leave a tight feeling on your skin, which means your skin is not compatible with the product.

There are facial wash products that are already in the form of foam, actually. In double cleansing, you have to use facial wash products after you remove the excess dirt from your face using a face cleanser.

What is double cleansing?

Double cleansing is a face-cleansing method that requires you to clean your face with two cleansers. Typically, you can do double-cleansing by using micellar water followed by facial wash.

However, the currently popular double-cleansing method is quite different. It will require you to cleanse with an oil cleanser first then a water-based cleanser. For example, use a cleansing oil first, and follow with a micellar water.

How to do double cleansing?

The first step is all about dissolving oil-based impurities, with oil. Melting away makeup and excess sebum with oil won’t clog your pores, but rather gently break down and remove the buildup that can lead to breakout. After you’re done with the oil cleanser, before going to the second step, make sure to rinse the oil cleanser first with a washcloth or lukewarm water. The second step is a water-based cleanser. When your skin is still damp, use your water-based cleanser.

Why should I double cleanse?

By double cleansing, you will achieve a total cleanse. Just like the products’ type, oil-based cleansers will remove oil-based impurities on your face such as sebum. Doubling it with a water-based cleanser will remove water-soluble impurities such as dirt and sweat in the deeper layer of your skin.

Double cleansing for oily skin

However, oil-based cleansers may not be a solution for those with oily skin. It can cause a breakout if not cleansed properly afterward. This way, if you have oily skin, you can opt to double cleanse using two water-based cleansers for the routine.
