Excessive Skincare — Even your skin needs a break.
Having skin super shiny, glowy and young is becoming one of the most important goals of our life, especially in these days where the word “skincare” is used everywhere and by everyone. It’s so essential now to take care of our skin that it has become so hard not to get involved with all the information that is emerging around the beauty world. This trend is a direct consequence of social media: influencers focus their work mainly on skincare and beauty content, so we are forced to interact daily with this kind of topic.
In addition, many new brands for skincare are breaking into the social scene, perhaps too many! Isn’t that a sign that we’re overdoing our beauty routine? If on the one hand having so much beauty advice to refer to is such a great advantage, on the other we may risk being flooded with too much information without being able to figure out which ones are best for us. The best thing to do is follow a specific skincare routine, using only the products necessary for the specific needs of our skin.
But the most worrying aspect of this scenario is that the concern for our skin’s well-being is almost becoming an obsession: we think that the more products we use, the more benefits we give our skin. Totally wrong!
The overuse of products on our skin may cause serious problems over the years: it is not only about makeup products, but also the overload of skincare ones, such as creams, lotions and treatments. It sounds strange, but it’s true!
This happens especially if the products used contain too aggressive formulas, because they can alter the natural pH of the skin, compromising its main function, which is to protect our body against external agents, such as pollution and UV rays, and increasing the risk of damage and premature aging.
Watch out! Our skin is asking us to stop.
How can we realize that it’s time to give our skin a break? Among the alarm bells, irritation and sensitivity are the signs that we are using too many skin care products and that it is time to take a more minimalist approach and use fewer products.
Aside from the aggressive products, even if we choose and use the right ones, our skin should have the possibility to go on vacation. Yes, indeed!
One of the treatments that you need to dose, or even avoid if you don’t want to stress the already inflamed skin too much, is the scrub: the skin that already suffers from acne or hyperpigmentation can get worse due to its friction. In this case, you can opt for an exfoliating product that does not require an aggressive treatment like the scrub does. Although the suffering skin needs care, sometimes it’s more effective a moment of total detox.
However, in general, the habit of overloading the skin with heavy creams may clog the pores, and consequently slow down the natural renewal of the skin.
How can we avoid skin stress?
In other words, how can we stop using too many cosmetic products? Here is the most effective solution: step back and simplify your routine, and give your skin what it really needs, avoiding unnecessary products.
But, if you’re using a really wide range of products, it’s not that simple to identify what exactly is causing the problem, so it would be necessary to analyze the negative reactions that the skin is showing. Usually, the most simple and effective routine includes a proper cleansing, with which the skin of the face is cleaned, purified and cleansed. Afterwards, you can switch directly to an ultra-light cream, without weighing it down too much.
Moreover, creating too many layers of products on the skin every day can also compromise the effective absorption of some active ingredients, thus making treatments useless or even counterproductive, by disrupting our skin barrier.
Just press pause!
What if we gave our routine a few days off? Sometimes we come across the expression “intermittent fasting”, with which we can limit our daily amount of food. We could do the same thing with our skin. But how? At least once in a while, preferably when we stay at home, we should let our skin breathe without stressing it out by using nothing at all! Although it is highly recommended to constantly use a moisturizer, it may be a solution to strip it and leave the pores open and free.
Even if we are living in a historical period in which skincare routines are becoming increasingly complicated and complex, we can decide to get rid of all these steps without having to feel guilty. We should first stop buying all the products that become viral on social media, and then choose those that are suitable for our skin wellness with awareness. Also, when necessary, we should halve the skincare steps, focusing on the most essential ones or even leave it alone and give it a natural restoration without the help of any kind of treatment.
This could be a real gift to your skin. Too much is like the little, and very often the little is the best choice!
