There is so many different beautiful colors and luckily world is becoming a better place that now you can find methods and brands taking care of everyone without discremination.

I know for a long while people with dark skin it was even hard to find their concealer, foundation let alone different skincare brands that are more suitable for them.

Of course you know your skin and teh tradiotions always shoed you your way but I want to explain the difference once again hoping to help better.

  1. Pigment Producing Cells (melanocytes) Are Larger and Easier to Trigger

What is that means you might ask, in simple terms it means it make darker skin tones open to hyperpigmentation more severly. Such as: denatured alcohol (drying), fragrance (#1 cause of dermatitis), essential oils (skin sensitizers), and harsh acids (more likely to burn and lead to pigmentation). It is difficult to completely avoid hyperpigmentation in skin of colour.

2. The Skin is Thicker, thicker skin makes skincare ingredients takes more time to infuse into the skin.

3. It Loses more Ceramide Overtime

WHICH will cause more dryness in the skin, that means you will need to pick a more sub-optimal moisturizer.

  • Skin of colour requires more ceramides and more tyrosinase inhibitors for hyperpigmentation than lighter skin tones.

4. People of skin of colour with oily skin are more likely to get all 3 acne blemishes: first Acne, second Post Inflammatory Erythema (red marks, third Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (brown marks).

Now what to do with all those information. I will explain which products will be better for your skin!

  • instead of high percentage of ascorbic acid (which means having high c vitamin inside the skincare. It has lower pH so it might get more irritating in the sunlight), try to use more tetrahexyldecyl ascorbic (has higher pH range makes it more suitable for more skin colors).
  • instead of Glycolic Acid, switch it for the AHA Lactic Acid, which is more hydrating & less irritating for the darker skin color, so there is a lower chance of getting a damage in the skin barrier and/or getting pigmentation risk is lower.
  • rather than using higer percentage of retinol try to find more skincare which has less retinol and more retinaldehyde, it will be less irritating and works a lot faster in the darker skin color.
  • darker skin color is tend to have more of a dryer skin so engage in more skincare products has more glycerin helps you hydrate your skin better than the other products with less glycerin. N vitamin, B5 and E as well as niacinamiade and licorice root extract. These ingredients can help to even out skin tone, smooth texture and reduce the appearance of pores.
  • one more time! SUNSCREEN!! No matter the skin tone or the weather sunscreen is always important, it is important that to protect yourself from hyperpigmentation. Most of the sunscreens create a grey cast appearance in the darker skin color. In that case you may want to try a chemical sunscreen or for ones known to look good on skin of colour which has more tints.

Unfortunately, people with darker skin color is more prone to not realize skin cancer in earlier stages, although it is more harder to have skin cancer among the darker skin community it is still more dangerous since it is harder to realize it in early stages. I wanted to mention this topic so if you see a mole on your skin or changes that not happened before I would suggest to see a professional!

I hope you have more knowledge in your skin or if you have more lighter skin and wanted to learn more about darker skin it helped you trough it! Do not forget to take care of yourself and people around you more!

Sincerely,

Hoping for the clearest skin…
