It is the end of the world as we know it, and I feel… unexpectedly optimistic. Maybe you do too.

Depending on who you read, listen to, or follow, you might have picked up an increasing sense of urgency about the fate of the planet and the people on it. People are concerned about climate change, systemic racism, war in Ukraine and Israel/Palestine, extreme economic inequality, the exponential growth of artificial intelligence, more potential pandemics, bioweapons, mass shootings, catastrophic food shortages, gas prices (always!), desperate immigration, and more.

When it feels like catastrophe is imminent, it might be helpful to know that many of your ancestors survived the end of their worlds.

How did they do it?

We might believe that if the crisis we fear comes to pass “the” world will end. But what is more likely is that “a” world will end.

Assuming that even one of the many potential catastrophes happens, what will we do? How will we live in the days or years after the crisis when we will have to continue to exist in the ruins of a changed world? What will we do if two or more major global catastrophes come to pass?

The Metacrisis

To live in a world of peace and justice we must imagine it first. For this, we need artists and writers. I write to reach for the edges of what is possible.
