3 Reasons to Keep Your Head Up and Your Back Upright
1. Physically: You’re Not Easily Shaken
“Stand up straight.”
When we are young, our parents remind us to stand up straight, and although it’s embarrassing to hear, keeping the back straight is an excellent message. When you really love someone and they’re slumped with their head down, you tell them to stand upright. You tell them to keep their head up.
You want them to be strong.
Each one of us is different and has our own way of standing. Our posture is based on the proportion of our own bodies. However you choose to stand, you cannot slouch.
When you are slouched, you have no strength in your upper body and you’re easily shaken. You’re easily blown away by the winds and the storm washes you off. When your head is down, you won’t know what hit you.
You must keep your feet firmly planted on the ground and your head reaching for the sky. When your head is held high, your back is pulled straight and you say bye-bye to annoying backaches.
Back pain is a debilitating problem that affects many people all over the world, and some of it is because of bad posture. The correct posture keeps your bones, joints, ligaments, and muscles properly aligned, minimizing tension and relieving back pain.
Slouch long enough and your spine will take on a curved look. A good posture stops that from happening. Keeping a good posture leads to less stress and fewer headaches.
You look more stable when you stand tall. You also appear more attractive when you stand upright.
Stand in front of the mirror with your chest out. You’ll automatically look great and feel more confident about yourself. You may even add an inch to your height.
With fewer headaches, no back pain, less stress, and an attractive physical body, you can handle anything life throws at you.
Enlightenment isn’t a destination. It happens a little bit every time you work on improving yourself.
2. Mentally: You’re in the Right State of Mind
When you stand upright, you breathe better. When you breathe better, you feel better. When you feel better, you’re in the right state of mind.
Standing up straight not only improves your breathing, but also improves your mood and your energy levels. Feeling down? Stand like a superhero. Standing upright makes you more optimistic. It makes you more confident.
Ever heard of the superhero pose?
There’s a study that shows that if you stand in the superhero pose — head up, chest out, hands on hips, legs hip-length apart — for just five minutes before a job interview or a big presentation or whenever you need a boost, you not only feel powerful and more confident, you perform better.
You have to try it for yourself.
If you need a little pick me up, pick yourself up by standing upright. When you’re down, lift yourself up by keeping your back straight. The right posture can help you overcome anxiety and depression if you set your intention.
Can you believe that?
When you feel down, standing or sitting up straight is a great way to lift yourself up, literally and figuratively.
3. Spiritually: Energy Flows Easily Through You
Try sipping water through a bent straw.
Your spine is the straw, and the energy that flows through you is the water. Try it. It doesn’t work very well.
The spine is the physical gateway to higher levels of spiritual awareness. The universe lives and flows in your spine. Your spine is home to your chakras. It must be straight for energy to move up and down.
When you slouch, this energy doesn’t move easily the same way water doesn't move easily through a bent straw. It gets blocked or stuck and that can cause many physical (headaches and back pain), mental (anxiety and depression), and spiritual (feeling lost and out of it) problems.
Keeping the spine straight ensures that energy flows where it needs to go.
Just like the air you breathe. When you slouch, you reduce your capacity to take deep breaths, and if you can’t take deep breaths in and out; you hold on to dense energies which eat you up from the inside out. Stand up straight so you can let it all out.
When the spine is straight, you’re aligned. The key is to stand as if you’re carrying your crown chakra above your head. And you are. This top chakra must be kept straight to receive divine energy from above you.
If you slouch, you are not aligned. You lose yourself and your mind wanders about elsewhere. When your mind is wandering about elsewhere, you’re not in your body and that’s no way to live.
The key is to stand as if you’re carrying the universe on your head
You do not exist for the sake of the world; you exist for the sake of yourself. Enlightenment isn’t a destination. It happens a little bit every time you work on improving yourself.
Usually, not having self-awareness, we try to change everything but ourselves. We try to organize things outside of ourselves, but if we ourselves are not in order, it’s almost impossible to organize things outside of ourselves.
When we do things the right way, everything else in our lives will be organized. When we have our body and mind in order, everything else will exist in the right place and in the right way.
Give yourself time and be compassionate. Don’t criticize. If you’ve been slouching for years, correcting your posture will be a bit uncomfortable and you will be met with some difficulty, but with practice, you will be able to breathe better, naturally, easily, and deeply.
When you stand better, you breathe. When you breathe better, you feel better and when you feel better, you can reach for the clouds.
