The current state of global mental health is alarming. A 2019 report published by the World Health Organization shows that one in eight individuals worldwide i.e., 970 million people were affected by mental disorders. Anxiety and depression were the most prevalent, followed by alcohol use & drug abuse.
A 2017 study painted a similar picture, reporting that 792 million people, 10.7% of the global population, suffered from some form of mental health disorder.
Covid 19 Impact on Mental Health
The pandemic only exacerbated the crisis, sending mental health cases skyrocketing.
28% for depression; 26.9% for anxiety; 24.1% for post-traumatic stress symptoms; 36.5% for stress; 50.0% for psychological distress; and 27.6% for sleep problems. The WHO estimates that the pandemic alone triggered a 25% increase in anxiety and depression worldwide.
