“I want to quit,” I said.

“You can’t quit, not yet.”

“But I want to.”

“But you won’t.”

I shook my head no and frowned.

“I can’t, man, this is too much.”

It was 6:00 a.m.; we had just finished weights (next was running on the track) and my college basketball teammate John Whorton put his large arm around me.

“I almost quit too. I know how you feel. If you quit, you let them win. Don’t let them win.”

I was at the lowest point of my short basketball career. I was lower than low. I was a lone freshman playing basketball at the D1 level, my lifetime dream, and I didn’t care anymore. I wanted to quit and walk away. It wasn’t worth it. I couldn’t go on any longer like this.

All I could think about was how unfair Coach Waters was and how he didn’t even want me on the team. How hard our conditioning was. How hard our practices were. How much my legs hurt. How much was I getting fouled, and how no one stood up for me when they did. How much I hated being on a…
