I experimented with meditation in my mid to late twenties. I obtained the necessary training in Transcendental Meditation but at the time I didn’t have the patience to stick with it.

During the lockdown in 2019, I decided to give regular meditation another go, and with a caveat — I had to do it for thirty days in a row without fail.

The first few days I was restless as hell and my mind was all over the place. Talk about a crazy mind. A witness to these thoughts would have been astonished at the amount of nonsense floating around inside my brain.

I chose a mantra as my preferred method to calm the mind. It was usually around minute three when my mind started wandering. ‘Oh gosh, I must remember to ring…..today,’ ‘Did I buy loo roll yesterday?’ ‘I wonder what she meant by that comment?’ On and On went the drivel of my thoughts.

This lasted for weeks. Around day 23 I had a breakthrough. I managed to focus on the mantra exclusively for around 4 minutes and I experienced my first profound understanding of why meditation is so powerful.

A glimpse of peace.
